The following is the solution for the hunt. Enjoy!
For this hunt, we did things a little different. We gave some preamble at the beginning of the event to give a bit of guidance. This was all based on feedback we've had from prior events. For this event we also introduced our own branded stickers with a clue word. We hope you liked them.
This clue had a picture of "squigly tummy guy". If you've been through the PATH and been observant, you'll know this is the logo for The Great American Backrub. The one you had to find was in Commerce Court. Once there, you had to find a sticker. The sticker was on the right leg of the table in the storefront. The word you were looking for was walk.
This one should have been easy - especially during the Olympics (Go Canada). The home of the lucky loonie is the The Hockey Hall of Fame. Once there, you had to note that the founding sponsor at the top of the list was Imperial Oil Limited.
Hmmm. A sake barrel. So that's what that is. You were told it was in the PATH but not much else. Potentially a tricky clue unless you work in Scotia Plaza.
The rebus "Nine minus e" + "key" and the kind of chef "Sous" + "She" should have got you NINKI and SUSHI. This should have helped direct you to Ninki Japanese Cuisine. You had to note the restaurant name.
During our audit and final pass a few days before, this store was there... This happy little fellow should have got you to "Jolly Tots". Unfortunately not jolly anymore. We gave you the clue for this one: "great gifts".
A green door. With a lion on it. Where have I seen that? The hint "well travelled" meant that the door had been relocated. If you've been in Brookfield Place, then you've seen the facade. On the end of the facade was a plaque that told the story. In the story, you were told the door (and the entire facade) was moved from Wellington street. If you were really observant, you noticed the picture in our story in the Metro News from Friday, February 12th. Read it here.
At the end of the clue, we told you that all of the "location" based clues would be released until Friday and on Monday you would be given information on how to solve the puzzle.
Blah, blah, blah, Sam. There were only a couple of important pieces of information in this clue. First, Sam left at 1:34 a.m. to catch a northbound train that would leave the station in 10 minutes. So you had to visit the TTC website to figure out when the last northbound was. It happened to be King. There happen to be two entrances to King subway station from the PATH. The next piece of info we gave was "naturally" Sam's "solution" was to stay inside. We wanted you to find Natural Solutions in the Scotia Plaza just steps from the north entrance to King station. The orange sticker bathed in blue neon said "C490080".
This was potentially tricky. The compass rose was partially obscured by a circular stage that had tvs showing the Olympics. The clue told you it was near the Great American Backrub so it wasn't too hard. It next told you to walk east using the compass rose and you should have found a recycling centre for toner cartridges, cell phones and... batteries. You were told you were looking for a local store that had the singular of one of these in the name. Just steps away you should have found Battery Zone and the sticker there had the words "go to".
Your answer to clue #3 was "Imperial Oil Limited". The first, second and ninth letters are "I", "M" and "O". You were told to rearrange these letters to get the first word of a restaurant name. You were looking "MIO". Once you found the restaurant, you had to find the sticker (on the Espresso machine in the window outside the restaurant). The word you needed was "chocolate".
A bunch of squares. Where was this? The hint said inside at street level and where two streets meet. For the hints to street names, we were looking for "Melinda" (wife of a famous William: Bill Gates) and "Jordan" (a famous Michael).
This was fairly easy if you had the right answers. The first and sixth letters from "chocolate" are "C" and "L". The second letter of the last word from clue #4 was "U" from "Cuisine". Even if you thought we meant "Ninki Sushi" for clues 4 and 5, you would have been ok although Ninki Sushi is not in the PATH. The third letter from "great gifts" is an "E". The four letters spell the word "clue".
The answer was Wellington - the street where the door used to be. The clue asked which direction was the street from the current location of the door. Wellington is "north" of Brookfield Place.
The sticker at Natural Solutions had "C490080" on it. You were told to count the number of zeroes (3) and add the second last number (8). Hopefully you got 11.
This clue told you that you had enough info to find the "treasure". Following the instructions you should have got:
"go to clue 11 walk north"
Sure enough, if you go to the intersection of Jordan Street and Melinda Street and walk north, you should see the plaque on the left (west) side of Jordan Street as you reach King Street. Here is what the plaque looks like:
On the plaque, it says "The first Methodist church in Toronto was built upon this site in A.D 1818. If you go back to the description of the event, we made reference to "faith" and "soul" that tied in loosely to the plaque being related to something "spiritual".
If you had a tough time finding the door with the lion on it, this gave you a hint that it was near the home of the "lucky loonie".
If you were stuck finding the orange sticker, this gave you a hint to "Natural Solutions".
